I’ve been in a state of suspended animation for a few weeks - maybe we all have. Waiting for the fires to stop burning. Waiting for the cold snap to pass. Waiting for the news cycle to make a little bit of sense. Soon I’ll start waiting for the groundhog, and if he lets me down this year, there’s going to be hell to pay.
Work wise, I’m also waiting. I wrote something, my editor has it, and she’s quiet.
Too quiet.
I open my email to check every hour and it’s a like a tumbleweed rolls across the screen. I daydream that she’ll text me (she’s not a texter) with a smiley face emoji or a gold star - something to tide me over. I’m in the anxious place between my idea being what I hope it is and finding out that I might be completely delusional. Waiting, you’ll be surprised to know, is not actually my favorite thing.
In the meantime, I’m getting ready for a big February. I am putting together a talk because I’ll be presenting at The Deep Dive Virtual Retreat, Feb 1 and 2, brought to you by
. If you are at all interested in writing and getting published, you must listen to their podcast - it is a treasure trove of information and insights that really make a difference. Their Deep Dive is a two day virtual retreat where they bring in writers, agents and editors to speak about everything from idea generation to getting a book on the shelves. I actually attended this retreat years ago, and it was just the jumpstart I needed. It is one of the great plot twists of my life that I’m presenting this time.📍My topic is character development, specifically finding the emotional arc of your character by identifying their wound. Simply said, if you can figure out where she’s broken, you’ll have a better idea of how she’ll move through your story and where she needs to heal.💔

I must have blacked out the last time I was in the waiting place because I don’t remember how I survived.
I predict the wait will be worth it! Based on your track record. :-)
